2020 has felt like an entire decade but we've finally made it to the end of the year, and since this is the last episode of the year we felt it fitting to take a look back at the year that was.

In this 'best of' episode we take clips from the top 10 listened to episodes all year long. We appreciate the guests and conversations we had on the show, and use it to inform the content for 2021. We're entering the 5th year of the podcast and will continue to evolve the show to ensure we're providing content which helps to make a more inclusive world.

Thank you to all the wonderful guests we had this year, and thank you to the listeners who keep coming back and lending their voices to the discussion. Happy New Year!

Dr. Tiffany Woodus has over 10 years of experience in healthcare. She completed a Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2006. Subsequently, she completed an internship and residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW)/Parkland Health & Hospital System in 2010. During her tenure here, Dr. Woodus was awarded with such accolades as distinguished teaching awards. She is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology. After completing training, Dr. Woodus continued at UTSW as an Assistant Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology where she participated on various residency & policy development committees.

Dr. Woodus is on the podcast today to discuss Woodus Obsterics & Gynecology which is committed to improving black maternal health outcomes:

"The maternal health and well-being of all mothers, particularly black and brown mothers, is under attack. The CDC defines health disparities as the preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.

At Woodus Obstetrics & Gynecology, we recognize other POC experience disparities in maternal health outcomes, however black maternal health has been marginalized far too long. We refuse to be complicit by remaining silent.

It’s not, 'Only “Black Mamas Matter.'

It’s not, 'Black Mamas Matter More/Most.'

It’s, 'Black Mamas Matter, Too.'

Dr. Woodus and I discussed the importance of having a space where one can truly relax and focus on the business of giving birth. Dr. Woodus and I discussed how she wanted to create a space where Black women felt safe, secure, and understood. That her practice seeks to educate, elevate, and empower mothers is something to be celebrated. We can only hope her practice is the first of many more like it.

Martha Brockenbrough (rhymes with broken toe) is the author of two books for adults and numerous books for young readers (with several others on the way), including YA fiction and nonfiction, picture books, and a forthcoming chapter book series.

Martha is on the show today to discuss her book "Unpresidented: A Biography Of Donald Trump"

From no-holds-barred reality TV star to unlikely candidate, Donald J. Trump rose to the highest political office: President of the United States of America.

Learn fascinating details about his personal history, including:

-Why Trump’s grandfather left Germany and immigrated to America
-Why Woodie Guthrie wrote a song criticizing Trump’s father
-How Trump’s romance with Ivana began―and ended
-When Trump first declared his interest in running for President

Richly informed by original research and illustrated throughout with photographs and documents, Unpresidented is a gripping and important read.

Martha and I discussed her research into Donald Trump's life for this book, and why she felt compelled to document his history for future generations. Coincidentally we recorded this episode on the eve of the 2020 Presidential Election. Knowing how the election ended up gives this episode a bit more hindsight perspective than we even knew when recording. I hope you'll enjoy this important discussion.

"I once interviewed a woman shot in the head by hijackers and left for dead on the tarmac.

I raced my bike against Greg LeMond in South Africa (and beat him). I played a tennis match against the world’s top-ranked wheelchair tennis player (and lost). I channeled a 330-pound, Samoan, retired NFL nose tackle who is gay (Esera Tuaolo, for his memoir). I played softball on snowshoes in the summertime (wood chips spread across the infield). I rapped a base hit off former Twins pitcher Rick Aguilera.

I listened to a nurse tell me the story of prying a shotgun shell out of Ernest Hemingway’s hand when he was intent upon killing himself. I profiled a woman who is a Roman Catholic priest. I attended a powwow with LGBTQ Native Americans. I interviewed a mortician in the room where she embalmed my father. I interviewed a 15-year-old boy in his hospital room after he tried to stop a school shooter.

All in a few days' work, stretching back to 1981, when I began freelancing as a senior in high school, same time I got clean and sober. My work has won a couple dozen awards and been nominated for a National Magazine Award and a Pulitzer Prize (but didn't win either of those).

Along the way, I have lived in Boise, Boston, Florence, London, Paris, and St. Paul. Today I'm at home in my native Minneapolis with my wife Maria, our two children, and a golden retriever named Maya. - John Rosengren

John Rosengren is a frequent sportswriter including authoring one of Joe's favorite books "Blades of Glory: The True Story Of A Young Team Bred To Win" about High School Hockey in Minnesota (think Friday Night Lights, but with Hockey).

John is on the show today to discuss writing Blades of Glory, his current book "A Clean Heart", and the effect sports can have on our kids.

Enjoy!
