On this episode of the podcast Joe talks to George Lee aka The Conscious Lee. Lee and Joe discuss the importance of education in today's world, how to motivate people to make the change they seek, and ultimately how we can all make a more inclusive world.
Enjoy!
Having grown up in the small town of Bryan, Texas, George’s personal experience with adversity still informs him to this day. Seeing the educational power of discomfort caused George to adopt a strategy which he calls “purposefully provocative” whereby people are placed into unfamiliar positions and situations which fosters critical engagement with different perspectives. People are primed to return to their routines and daily scripts, so being placed in an uncomfortable or new position forces people to think of new strategies and tactics outside of their own familiar experiences. George is a self-described “Edutainer” who seamlessly mixes education and entertainment to be purposefully provocative.
George holds a Bachelors in African & African American Studies, Master’s degrees both Human Relations and Adult Higher Education as well as Graduate Certificates in Women and Gendered Studies along with Human Resource and Diversity Development from the University of Oklahoma. He is currently leading the nationally renowned University of Oklahoma debate team as the Coordinator of Policy Debate while also being a Language Arts Public High School Teacher in Oklahoma City Public School District. In addition to his other positions he holds a professorship in the Social Work Department at the University of Oklahoma. George was celebrated as one of the best “debate-minds” in collegiate debate and was named in the top 20 College Policy Debaters of the past decade. He been featured in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, along with The New York Times and he co-hosts his own original podcast called, “The Chop Up”.
At the heart of George’s drive is the belief that Education is Elevation. Knowing and understanding other perspectives can create more informed decision making which leads to better outcomes for both you and others. Being purposefully provocative lets George educate his audiences through engaging experiences they would never otherwise have. The lynchpin of education is experience so George offers the necessary experiences to cause a shift in both mindset and action.

Etan has stopped speaking since his mother left. His father and grandfather don’t know how to help him. His friends have given up on him.
When Etan is asked to deliver a grocery order to the outskirts of town, he realizes he’s at the home of Malia Agbayani, also known as the Creature. Malia stopped going to school when her acute eczema spread to her face, and the bullying became too much.
As the two become friends, other kids tease Etan for knowing the Creature. But he believes he might have a cure for Malia’s condition, if only he can convince his family and hers to believe it too. Even if it works, will these two outcasts find where they fit in?
ALL OF ME is the story of Ari, an overweight boy who loves cryptozoology and role-playing games. He has body-image issues, and he is tired of letting his weight define him. After a move across the country, his parents work selling and promoting his mother's paintings and sculptures. Ari's artist mother needs space to create, and his father is gone for long stretches of time on "sales" trips. Somehow Ari is supposed to prepare for his already late bar mitzvah! Meanwhile, Ari makes new friends: Pick, the gamer, the artsy Jorge, and the troubled Lisa. He is also relentlessly bullied because he's overweight, but he can't tell his parents—they're simply not around enough to listen. After an upsetting incident, Ari's mom suggests he go on a diet, and she gives him a book to help. But the book—and the diet—can’t fix everything. As Ari faces the demise of his parents' marriage, he also feels himself changing, both emotionally and physically. Here is a much-needed story about accepting the imperfect in oneself and in life.

In this episode of the podcast Joe welcomes Cat H. Bradley to the podcast. Cat is the host of the fantastic "We admitted: the recovering us project" podcast and stops by the show to discuss a whole range of topics. Joe & Cat discuss goodness, our relationship with the world, and how we fully live in our own individual truth. It's a great episode that we know you'll enjoy!

Recovering our humanity and creating connection one bold admission at a time. Two intersectional feminist writers, one mixed, one white, each with a decade plus in recovery from alcohol, drugs, eating disorders, and the racist capitalist heteropatriarchy that raised us, radically and honestly explore how curiosity, community, and art are the powers that heal.

In this episode of the podcast Joe provides you with an extra special "rewind" edition of the podcast. Instead of providing a "Best of" episode or replaying an older episode again, we bring you a previous episode of a different podcast, This is Parenting.
Joe was a guest on this podcast back in June, 2019. Joe was fortunate enough to be a guest on this podcast and share his personal parenting journey. Though the podcast is no longer active, we hope sharing it here allows the podcast to live on.
Take a listen as we rewind the clock back to 2019!
About this episode of the This is Parenting Podcast
Joe is a dad of two living in Texas and is a host of his own show about parenting called the Dtalks podcast. I really enjoyed having Joe on the show because he brought some really interesting perspectives and topics up that I think you are going to love. He shares about how he’s always wanted to be a dad, even having names picked out for his future kids when he was in high school. With all that enthusiasm, Joe looked for parenting resources to help him prepare for baby number one. But found that almost everything was geared towards moms or played into the bumbling idiot dad trope.
So he started his own show to tackle the issues dads were coming to him with. We talk about a few of those issues in todays episode like how to effectively communicate with your partner, Joe’s unique concern about social media, and his favorite piece of advice to give to new dads. A big thank you to Joe for coming on the show. I’ve linked up his podcast in the show notes at This Is Parenting Podcast .com but be sure to search DTalks podcast on your favorite player.

In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to world famous author Heidi Murkoff. They discuss her book "What to Expect When You're Expecting", how she has grown her brand from one book to an entire "What to Expect" brand, and the current focus on #BumpDay
Enjoy!
About Heidi Murkoff
It all started with a baby and a book. Heidi Murkoff conceived the idea for What to Expect When You’re Expecting during her first pregnancy, when she couldn’t find answers in the books she turned to for much-needed advice.
Just hours before delivering her daughter Emma, Heidi delivered the proposal for a pregnancy guide that would help other expectant parents sleep better at night. She was a mom on a mission — a mission that was only getting started.
Dubbed the “pregnancy bible,” What to Expect When You’re Expecting has more than 22 million copies in print. Now in its 5th edition, the book hit a publishing milestone in June of 2015 when it became the longest-running title of all time on The New York Times bestseller list, a record it still holds. USA Today has named it one of the most influential books in a quarter century — also reporting that it is read by 93 percent of women who read a pregnancy book.
About #BumpDay
In 2015, The What to Expect Project debuted the social campaign #BumpDay with founding partners International Medical Corps, 1,000 Days and the United Nations Foundation Universal Access Project and in collaboration with WhatToExpect.com. The campaign celebrates beautiful bumps and healthy pregnancies around the world, while raising awareness about the urgent need to end maternal deaths and to advocate for improved maternal-health care both in the U.S. and globally. #BumpDay encourages moms to post photos of their bumps while sharing messages of support for moms – and has generated hundreds of thousands of posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, including from such influencers as Olivia Wilde, Christy Turlington, Coco Rocha, Brooklyn Decker, Pharrell Williams, TV personalities Sarah Haines, Jessica Moore, and Jenni Pulos, as well as numerous policymakers.
The total reach across all social platforms for #BumpDay 2018 was over 33 million. In 2020, #BumpDay received mentions from Forbes and the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, and numerous leading domestic and global health entities and organizations were actively involved, among them the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, March of Dimes, the National Partnership for Women & Families, the National Association of County Health Officials, mothers2mothers, Project Hope, the Hunger Project, Pathfinder International, and Jhpiego.

In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to Dr. Deborah Pope about the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, the EJK Awards, an upcoming documentary, and the importance of representation in children's literature. Specifically representation in books that 'celebrate childhood'.
Enjoy!
About Dr. Deborah Pope
During her tenure as Executive Director, Deborah Pope has focused the work and mission of the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation on increasing diversity in children’s literature and enriching the quality of public education.
Through her efforts, the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award is recognized internationally as an imprimatur of quality children’s books for a diverse audience. She has shaped the EJK Bookmaking Competition in New York City into a program easily transferred to school districts across the country; increased the national impact of the EJK Mini-Grants Program; and developed the Foundation website into an invaluable, wide-ranging resource for families, educators and researchers.
Deborah was co-executive producer of the Amazon Snowy Day Holiday Special which premiered in 2016, earned two Daytime Emmys®, two Kidscreen Awards and a BAFTA nomination. Her campaign to create postage stamps honoring Ezra succeeded in 2017, when the USPS issued a series of four stamps with scenes from The Snowy Day.
Deborah came to the Foundation from an extensive career in theatre and arts-in-education. She was Founding Artistic Director of The New Theatre of Brooklyn (TNT), an award-winning regional theatre for which she developed an enriched arts-in-education program. She consulted on arts-in-education programming for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and Department of Education, served on granting panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York Drama League, and was a board member of of the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (ART/NY) and the Roundtable Coalition of Arts-in-Education Providers.
About The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation
The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation was incorporated in 1964, with Ezra as President and his lifelong friend, Martin Pope, as Secretary, and remained private until Ezra’s death, in 1983. His will directed that the Foundation use the royalties from his books for social good. It was left to his successors to decide how best to carry out his wishes.
With Ezra’s royalties, Martin Pope and his late wife, Lillie Pope, who became President and Vice President of the Foundation, focused their efforts on a population especially dear to Ezra: children. During his impoverished boyhood, the public schools where he won prizes in art and the public libraries where he learned about the world were lifelines that allowed him to dream of success. Through the support of its programs, the Foundation gives generations of children the same kind of opportunities, and hopefully, to a lifetime of learning, a love of reading and a belief in themselves.
About the EJK Awards
Now celebrating its 35th Anniversary, the Ezra Jack Keats Award was created to nurture illustrators and writers, early in their careers, who create extraordinary books that reflect our diverse population, the universal experience of childhood and the strength of family. Over the years the EJK has succeeded in fostering the early careers of many of our country’s leading children’s book makers.

About Eric & Julia Lewald
Eric Lewald and Julia Lewald are two of the premier writer-producers in youth-oriented and animated television, with over 700 produced credits, a number-one hit, an Emmy nomination and an Environmental Media Award between them. They have been showrunners, together or individually, on 14 series, including X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, the show that put Marvel characters on the map and made Fox TV the number one network in kids’ programming.
Eric and Julia met at Walt Disney TV Animation during the era of The Disney Afternoon, where they each wrote for Chip ’n’ Dale’s Rescue Rangers, Goof Troop, Darkwing Duck, Tale Spin, and Winnie the Pooh.
The Lewalds, both together and individually, have developed series for most of the major studios – for Universal, MGM, Fox, Disney; for Ivan Reitman at Northern Lights; and for Spielberg and Katzenberg at Dreamworks. At Sam Raimi’s Renaissance Films, they supervised the writing on all 50 episodes for the Hercules/Xena spin-off Young Hercules, starring Oscar-nominee Ryan Gosling. For Bonnie Hammer at USA Network they developed and ran Streetfighter, the top animated series on the network. Their RoboCop: Alpha Commando resurrected the RoboCop franchise, and Exo Squad, whose first year Eric supervised, became Universal’s number one animated action series. Julia’s Skeleton Warriors series was a hit on CBS.
The Lewalds most recently were developers/showrunners for the first successful 3D-CGI animated action-adventure series, Dream Defenders, for Singapore’s Tiny Island Productions, which premiered in September, 2011, as the top hit on the Sony-Discover-Imax 3D cable network, 3Net.

There are hundreds of books on parenting, and with good reason—becoming a parent is scary, difficult, and life-changing. But when it comes to books about parenting identity, rather than the nuts and bolts of raising children, nearly all are about what it's like to be a mother.
Drawing on research in sociology, economics, philosophy, gender studies, and the author's own experiences, Father Figure sets out to fill that gap. It's an exploration of the psychology of fatherhood from an archetypal perspective as well as a cultural history that challenges familiar assumptions about the origins of so-called traditional parenting roles. What paradoxes and contradictions are inherent in our common understanding of dads? Might it be time to rethink some aspects of fatherhood?
Gender norms are changing, and old economic models are facing disruption. As a result, parenthood and family life are undergoing an existential transformation. And yet, the narratives and images of dads available to us are wholly inadequate for this transition. Victorian and Industrial Age tropes about fathers not only dominate the media, but also contour most people's lived experience. Father Figure offers a badly needed update to our collective understanding of fatherhood—and masculinity in general. It teaches dads how to embrace the joys of fathering while guiding them toward an image of manliness for the modern world.
About Jordan Shapiro -
Jordan Shapiro, PhD is a globally celebrated American thought leader. He's senior fellow for the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, and Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution. His Forbes' column (2012-17) on global education, learning through digital play, kids and culture was read by over 5 million people around the world. He is an international speaker and consultant whose fresh perspective combines psychology, philosophy, and economics in unexpected ways. His book, The New Childhood: Raising Kids To Thrive in a Connected World (Little, Brown Spark 2018) changed the cultural conversation about parenting and screen time.
In his upcoming book, Father Figure: How to be a Feminist Dad (Little, Brown Spark 2021), Shapiro offers a norm-shattering perspective on fatherhood, family, and gender essentialism. This thoughtful exploration of dad-psychology—presented from an archetypal perspective—challenges our familiar assumptions about the origins of so-called traditional parenting roles. There are hundreds of books on parenting, but when it comes to books about parenting identity, rather than the nuts and bolts of raising children, nearly all are about what it's like to be a mother. Father Figure fills that gap. It teaches dads how to embrace the joys of fathering while guiding toward an image of manliness for the modern world.

Joe and Kyle discuss the origin story for this unique Quesadillas-focused restaurant, Kyle's entrepreneurship background, and how his company has adapted in the era of COVID, and how they're pivoting in 2021. Kyle also points out that he wanted to ensure Dillas was "the community restaurant, not just a restaurant in the community."

About Dillas Quesadillas -
Dillas has been a dream in the making for many many years. It started out as an idea in college that was fun to just think about, but all the stars aligned and made Dillas a reality! The hard work, sweat and tears are all worth it in the end
One night while brainstorming names (Quesadilla King, Dilla Villa, The Fold Over, etc…I think at one point we had 60 names on the table) the movie Napoleon Dynamite, a classic and huge hit at the time, came on. At one point there is a scene where Napoleon is hungry and asks his grandma “what’s there to eat?” She responds, “Knock it off Napoleon, make yourself a dang quesa-DILLA!” As we looked at each other we all knew that we had the name. Dillas (Pronounced Dill-uhs) was the perfect name. Dilla has since become our slang for a quesadilla and we hope Dillas will become the household name for a Primo Quesadilla Restaurant!

About Nick & Katherine -
I’m a 36 year old transgender man who looks like I might graduate high school this year… or maybe next.
Only recently have I embraced this good genetic fortune. I have yet to embrace the genetics of my hair loss though. #transmanproblems. #giveittime #baldisbeautiful
I have the very best wife, Katherine, and more kids than you can shake a stick at, okay only 5 (ages 6, 7, 11, 12 + 14), but that’s still a lot.
Five extraordinary families across the country take on the ambitious task of building their dream homes. Using self-shot footage, they capture the real-life experience of renovating with all the struggles and successes that lead to breathtaking reveals.

In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to author/illustrator/cartoonist Dana Simpson about her entire body of work AND life in ~45 minutes!
Seriously though, Dana Simpson is an incredible person who created the type of cartoon she wanted to read and it has spawned into an amazing project known as "Phoebe and Her Unicorn". Dana and Joe dig into her early work with "Ozy and Millie" and how one contest produced her most famous work. They also dig into how artists tend to use their work to process what they're currently going through. It's a fascinating discussion we hope you enjoy!
Dana Claire Simpson, a native of Gig Harbor, Washington, first caught the eyes of devoted comics readers with the internet strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the 2009 Comic Strip Superstar contest, she developed the strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn (originally known as Heavenly Nostrils), which is now syndicated in newspapers worldwide.
Simpson’s books have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, and won the Washington State Book Award and the Pacific Northwest Book Award. She lives with her spouse and her cat in Santa Barbara, California.

Rajani LaRocca believes that promoting diversity in children’s literature leads to empathy, and empathy makes the world a better place. She writes middle grade novels and picture books. Some of her books reflect her experiences as an immigrant, book nerd, and foodie; some explain medical topics to kids. And some are just ideas that pop into her head and won’t go away.
In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to author, and doctor Rajani LaRocca about 2 of her books "Red, White, and Whole" & "Much Ado About Baseball".
They discuss Rajani's background as an author, the reasons why she wrote each of the books, and the importance of representation in children's literature.
Enjoy!
13-year-old Reha, the daughter of Indian immigrants, is torn between two worlds—one with her parents and her Indian community, and one with her friends and 1980s pop culture. But then her mother falls ill, and she is torn in a different way. This middle grade novel-in-verse is about America and India, heritage and fitting in, Hindu mythology and 80’s pop music, holding on and letting go.
Trish moves to the town of Comity, MA and finds herself on the same summer baseball team as her math competition rival, Ben. The two 12-year-olds have to set aside their dislike for each other in order to help their team win, but the team is terrible. When a booklet of math puzzles claiming to reveal the “ultimate answer” arrives, Trish and Ben start solving them, and the team’s luck seems to turn around…or is that because of the unusual snacks they’re getting from the new snack shop in town, the Salt Shaker? When excitement then leads to tragedy, can Trish and Ben find the answer to the ultimate puzzle, or will they strike out when it counts the most? This companion novel to Midsummer’s Mayhem combines math, baseball, food, and magic.

Jeremy Nunes is one of the most interesting people I've had the pleasure of speaking to throughout the course of this podcast. The man is a current stand-up comedian, former Mayor, and former Professional Wrestler. Yes, Jeremy Nunes has done it all and he stops by the podcast today to cover each of those topics.
We primarily discuss his latest stand-up special "Who's With Me!?" but we also discuss his upcoming book "You Can't Write City Hall" sharing interesting stories and tidbits about his time as Mayor of his town. Jeremy is a delight and I cannot wait to have him back on the podcast!
