Do you ever find yourself consumed with the 'voice inside your head'?

How do you separate out what is helpful vs what is harmful?

When do you speak up to obtain the necessary tools and resources to come out of a difficult situation?

These are some of the topics discussed in the latest episode of the podcast!

Author John Schu stops by the podcast to discuss his latest book 'Louder Than Hunger' and he and Joe get into a deep conversation about how to navigate some of life's most difficult times growing up.

Also, because John is a librarian there are plenty of discussions around libraries, enjoy!

He was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker for his dynamic interactions with students and his passionate adoption of new technologies as a means of connecting authors, illustrators, books, and readers. About 'Louder Than Hunger'

Revered teacher, librarian, and story ambassador John Schu explores anorexia—and self-expression as an act of survival—in a wrenching and transformative novel-in-verse.

But another voice inside me says,
We need help.
We’re going to die.

Jake volunteers at a nursing home because he likes helping people. He likes skating and singing, playing Bingo and Name That Tune, and reading mysteries and comics aloud to his teachers. He also likes avoiding people his own age . . . and the cruelty of mirrors . . . and food. Jake has read about kids like him in books—the weird one, the outsider—and would do anything not to be that kid, including shrink himself down to nothing. But the less he eats, the bigger he feels. How long can Jake punish himself before he truly disappears? A fictionalized account of the author’s experiences and emotions living in residential treatment facilities as a young teen with an eating disorder, Louder than Hunger is a triumph of raw honesty. With a deeply personal afterword for context, this much-anticipated verse novel is a powerful model for muffling the destructive voices inside, managing and articulating pain, and embracing self-acceptance, support, and love.

Ooooh Natural 20!

oh nooooo crit miss!

Roll your initiative!

Which dice?

Your d20!

.....

What am I reading?

Oh, no big deal, it's just dogs playing a roleplaying game.

Oh, ok. Wait, whut?

.....

Yes, this week's wonderful author/illustrator, Scout Underhill, created a wonderful book "DnDoggos" based on their wonderful webcomic which has been in existence since 2017!

Enjoy this fun interview about this super exciting debut novel from Scout!

.....

About Scout Underhill

Scout Underhill (they/them) is a nonbinary, queer author-illustrator and a life-long professional dog cuddler, creating stories in the woods near Nashville, TN. They started drawing comics as a wee child and never stopped. DnDoggos began as a webcomic in 2017 after the real life dogs were caught playing tabletop roleplay games. Having no thumbs of their own in which to hold pencils, the doggos enlisted Scout's help to make them famous. When not drawing dog comics, Scout can be found thinking about dogs, playing with dogs, and cuddling with dogs. Scout received the award “Best Person In The World” from their own dogs in 2010 and has held the title every year since. DnDoggos GET THE PARTY STARTED (Feiwel & Friends, 2024) is their debut graphic novel.

About DnDoggos

Four adorable dogs have picked their characters and favorite dice and are ready to save the day in this middle-grade graphic novel debut from online comic creator Scout Underhill.

Magnus is tail-waggingly excited to share his favorite role-playing game with his friends! They've picked their characters and favorite dice, and are ready to set off on the adventure Magnus has created for them.

Pickles, a rough-and-tumble fighter; Tonka, a playful and fun-loving bard; and Zoey, a wise and caring cleric, are given a quest to fetch a magical dog collar from a nearby swamp. But when they triumphantly return, they soon find that the collar isn't the only thing that has gone missing from Tail's Bend. All the squeaky toys in town have disappeared and Squish, the mayor's young son, has set off on his own to find them.

It's up to the Doggos to rescue Squish, track down the missing toys, and save the day!

About 'Unstuck'

Lyla is thrilled when her seventh-grade English language arts class begins a daily creative writing project. For the past year, she’s been writing a brilliant fantasy novel in her head, and here’s her chance to get it on paper! The plot to Lyla’s novel is super complicated, with battle scenes and witches and a mysterious one-toed-beast, but at its core, it’s about an overlooked girl who has to rescue her beautiful, highly accomplished older sister.

But writing a fantasy novel turns out to be harder than simply imagining one, and pretty soon Lyla finds herself stuck, experiencing a panic she realizes is writer’s block. Part of the problem is that she’s trying to impress certain people—like Rania, her best friend who’s pulling away, and Ms. Bowman, the coolest teacher at school. Plus, there’s the pressure of meeting the deadline for the town writing contest. A few years ago, Lyla’s superstar teen sister Dahlia came in second, and this time, Lyla is determined to win first prize.

Finally, Lyla confides about her writing problems to Dahlia, who is dealing with her own academic stress as she applies to college. That’s when she learns Dahlia’s secret, which is causing a very different type of writer’s block. Can Lyla rescue a surprisingly vulnerable big sister, both on the page and in real life?

How much do YOU know about local politics?

What would you do if you didn't like the way your city was being run?

Would you decide to step off the sidelines and throw your hat into the ring?

that's the situation Dan Cogan found himself in 6 years ago when he decided to help create a better town and community by running for Bedford City Council.

Situated firmly between Dallas and Fort Worth, Bedford Texas is a strong suburban community with deep roots and a warm environment. However, back 6+ years ago, this currently thriving city felt a bit tired and worn down. Deciding to do something about it, Dan Cogan ran (and won) City Council and together with the help of the other city council members and former Mayor Michael Boyter, helped turn Bedford into a THRIVING community in the DFW area!

Come listen in as Dan tells the story of how he got elected, some early city council struggles, and how he stepped into the Mayor role to become the youngest Mayor in all of Tarrant County!

Enjoy!

Bo Johnson 1.jpeg

About Bo Johnson

Bo Johnson is a comedian from Seattle, Washington. He can be found headlining clubs, breweries, and appropriately sized theaters across the United States and Canada. His stand up has been featured on Netflix is a Joke Radio, season two of Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City on Comedy Central, Don’t Tell Comedy Secret Sets, & LOL Live! at the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. He was a finalist in the 39th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition and is a regular at festivals including Bumbershoot, SF Sketchfest, the Double Down Comedy Experience sponsored by Zappos, Life is Beautiful in Las Vegas, Rifflandia in Victoria BC, Prizefest, and Big Pine Comedy Festival in Phoenix. With a growing online audience Bo’s jokes have been viewed millions of times online.

Separate from stand up comedy one time Bo and his best friend from high school snuck into a movie theater as one person. That video was broadcast on TV shows like the now cancelled Caught on Camera with Nick Cannon on NBC and lowest rated daytime talk show at the time, The Meredith Veira Show. Bo still gets messages each year from friends seeing the video go viral on different meme accounts. Numerous magazines and newspapers also wrote about the hijinks, including an article in Cosmopolitan titled, “Man Sneaks His BFF Into Movie Theater by Stuffing Him Into His Pants.” More recently Bo trained his roommates dog by walking her to Shania Twain's "Man! I feel like a Woman!" in a viral stunt earning over 7 millions views on Tik Tok and press coverage in  both major and incredibly minor publications.

About 'The Reckoning'

Lamar can’t wait to start his filmmaking career like his idol Spike Lee.  And leave behind his small town of Morton, Louisiana. But for now, Lamar has to learn how to be a filmmaker while getting to know his grandfather.

When Gramps talks about his activism and Black history, Lamar doesn’t think much about it. Times have changed since the old Civil Rights days! Right? He has a white friend named Jeff who wants to be a filmmaker, too, even though Jeff’s parents never let him go to Lamar’s Black neighborhood. But there’s been progress in town. Right?

Then Gramps is killed in a traffic altercation with a white man claiming self-defense. But the Black community knows better: Gramps is another victim of racial violence. Protesters demand justice. So does Lamar. But he is also determined to keep his grandfather’s legacy alive in the only way he knows how: recording a documentary about the fight against injustice.

After interviewing Deborah Hopkinson a few months ago she mentioned the incredible illustrator Kate Gardiner who worked on the book 'Small Places, Close to Home'. She told me how amazingly talented she is, and after checking out the art myself I wholeheartedly agreed and KNEW I had to get her on the podcast.

I'm honored that Kate stopped by the show to tell us all about her experience working with Deborah, what drew her (pun intended!) to illustration, and what's next for her.

Enjoy!

About Kate Gardiner

Kate Gardiner is a New England based illustrator. Kate often finds herself inspired by quiet scenes of nature, finding beauty in moments of rest. She aims to capture the calm of these moments through her illustrations, often gaining inspiration through her mixed heritage, as a member of the Chaubunagungamaug band of Nipmuck Indians as well as the traditions of her Polish roots. She received her BFA in illustration at Maine College of Art & Design in 2020. Kate has several upcoming books, her debut picture book “Small Places, Close to Home”, by Deborah Hopkinson (HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray)  is scheduled for publication in Fall 2023. “Sometimes we Fall” by Randall de Seve (Penguin/Random House Studio), “A Family Tree” by Staci Droulliard (HarperCollins/Heartdrum) and is just beginning work on “Firefly Season” by Cynthia Leitich Smith (HarperCollins/Heartdrum). Did you know that the fairy godmother was actually grouchy? Or that the rodent she transformed into the coach’s horse was named Fred? Or that Cinderella hid from the prince when he came looking for her with that uncomfortable glass slipper?!

A best loved fairytale is given the ending it deserves in this clever picture book that shows a heroine shape her own destiny … and find her fairytale princess.

Trim Sets Sail

About 'Trim Sets Sail'

One small kitten learns about the great big world as he sets sail with his fellow shipmates, animal and human, in this historical fiction intermediate reader.

When Trim trips over a napping dog, little does he know that soon he’ll set sail and begin learning how to be a ship’s cat. Among his first lessons: the parts of the ship (the front is called the bow, like “bow wow”), the dynamics among his new colleagues (Jack the ship’s parrot is not so easy to befriend), and basic skills like climbing (up is easier than down) and swimming. With the assistance of Captain Flinders, Penny the ship’s dog, and Will the ship’s artist, Trim learns new skills, tests his limits and abilities, and finds a way to contribute to life onboard.

This delightful early reader series is inspired by the true story of Trim, often called the most famous ship’s cat in history. Owned by British explorer Matthew Flinders, Trim traveled on the HMS Investigator on the first expedition to circumnavigate Australia (1801–1803).

The Plot to Kill a Queen

About 'The Plot to Kill a Queen'

An well-crafted mystery about an intrepid young girl’s quest to foil a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I.

Emilia Bassano is a girl who relishes the music of words. Although she plays the lute and writes poetry, Emilia nurtures a dream: to hear her words come alive on stage. Emilia wants to write soliloquies for heroes and kings and queens of old, fashion fierce villains to make audiences howl, and try her hand at comedy and romance. Most of all, she wants to create unforgettable women characters.

On one of her trips to the theater, an unfortunate series of events leaves her penniless, with no way of watching the show. That is until a boy by the name of Will Shakespeare helps her sneak in to see the play. They realize they’re both aspiring playwrights and Emilia convinces Will to join her in her efforts to win a playwriting competition at the palace of Queen Elizabeth I.

However, when Emilia accidentally uncovers a plot to kill the queen, she is given the job of traveling to the castle where Mary Queen of Scots is being held captive, to discover who is responsible for the plan to murder Queen Elizabeth—and to thwart it! Can Emilia and her friends stop the plans of a disguised murderer on the loose?

How interested were you in animals growing up?

Ok, but do you EVEN KNOW a sloth!?

Where is your San Diego Zoo CD-ROM?

Animals always leave an impression on us. Whether through our pets, or through engaging with animals at a zoo, we all form opinions on animals early on.

In this episode, Joe gets to talk all about animals, the zoo, and the journey certain animals take and how we can learn from them with Georgeanne Irvine.

Enjoy!

About Georgeanne Irvin

San Diego native Georgeanne “George” Irvine has devoted her career to raising awareness about animals and wildlife conservation. She is the director of publishing for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, where she has worked for 45 years, as well as the author of nearly 30 children’s books about wildlife. Her award-winning Hope & Inspiration collection features true stories about individual animals from the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park that have overcome challenges in their lives. These hardcover books are illustrated with photographs and include wildlife facts and conservation information.

Prior to publishing, George served in many capacities during her tenure with the Zoo--she worked in public relations and marketing as well as philanthropy. Her duties ranged from being a media spokesperson to escorting celebrities around the Zoo and animals to television shows (such as Johnny Carson’s “Tonight” show) to creating collateral that helped the Zoo raise millions of dollars each year for conservation and new habitats.

San Diego Zoo Global's Hope and Inspiration book set now on sale! - YouTube

About the 'The Hope and Inspiration Collection'

These colorful, non-fiction stories are illustrated with engaging photographs and include a section on fun animal facts. They also feature each animal's foot or handprints on the endpapers of the books as well as a list of things kids and their families can do to help wildlife. The concept behind the Hope & Inspiration collection is that if children can relate to the individual animals featured in the books, they will be inspired to care about each animal, its species, and all other wildlife species.

What would you do if someone came back to the future to save the earth? No, we're not talking about the Terminator today (Looper maybe but no Arnold today), we're talking about 'We the Future' by fantastic author Cliff Lewis. In his book, Cliff details what might happen if someone from the future comes back to present day to teach us how we can help solve the climate crisis!

In this episode of the podcast, Cliff and Joe get into a fantastic conversation about Cliff's origins writing, what led him to write this book, how it's a moral imperative to "make the world a better place", and what we can all do to try and reverse some of the ways we've been contributing to the problem.

It's an overall fascinating discussion, enjoy!

About Cliff Lewis

5V9A2273_3.jpg

Cliff Lewis is an author and speaker who helps young readers explore weighty subjects through the lens of a wild-eyed, pop culture-addled imagination. He also specializes in freaking out his neighborhood by dictating these stories into his phone while jogging before dawn.

About 'We the Future'

JFP_FUTR_Poster24X36 (2).jpg

Ever since he learned about climate change, Jonah dreads a weather-beaten future where not even his asthma medication can save him. Luckily, a girl from that future arrives just in time to throw Jonah a lifeline. Sunny traveled back to the 2020s with a mission: Help Jonah launch a climate strike big enough to rewrite history. To do it, he’ll have to recruit his entire school before Halloween. Why so soon? Sunny won’t say. But how can Jonah win over 600 classmates when the only thing he dreads more than the end of the world is talking to other kids?

The debut novel by Cliff Lewis is a compelling introduction to climate science for any young reader unlikely to binge-read the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But, at its heart, We the Future is about more than the climate. It's about the practical steps that everyday kids can take to organize themselves for real world change.

About 'Elf Dog & Owl Head':

Clay has had his fill of home life. A global plague has brought the world to a screeching halt, and with little to look forward to but a summer of video-calling friends, vying with annoying sisters for the family computer, and tuning out his parents’ financial worries, he’s only too happy to retreat to the woods. From the moment the elegant little dog with the ornate collar appears like an apparition among the trees, Clay sees something uncanny in her. With this mysterious Elphinore as guide, he’ll glimpse ancient secrets folded all but invisibly into the forest. Each day the dog leads Clay down paths he never knew existed, deeper into the unknown. But they aren’t alone in their surreal adventures. There are traps and terrors in the woods, too, and if Clay isn’t careful, he might stray off the path and lose his way forever. Graced with evocative black-and-white illustrations by Junyi Wu, Elf Dog and Owl Head is heartfelt and exhilarating, wry and poignant, seamlessly merging the fantastic and the familiar in a tale both timely and timeless.

How incredible would it be if you would work on a project with one of your closest friends? How incredible would it be if that friend were your brother? How cooler still if the project was a book based on your own adventures growing up?

That's the case with the guests on the latest episode of The DTALKS Podcast. Jarrett & Jerome Pumphrey have been working on books for years and only recently were able to show the world what a dynamic duo they are. They're publishing the books they wish they had growing up and telling the stories they want to tell.

Our conversation on the podcast covered their backgrounds in writing & illustrating, the decision to make their latest book a "part comic/part written word" book, and what's next.

Enjoy!

Jarrett is an award-winning author-illustrator. He makes books for kids with his brother, Jerome. Their books include It’s a Sign!, Somewhere in the Bayou, The Old Boat, and their author-illustrator debut, The Old Truck, which received seven starred reviews, was named a Best Book of the Year by Publishers Weekly, and received the Ezra Jack Keats New Author Honor.

Jerome is a designer, illustrator, and writer, originally from Houston, TX. He studied graphic design at the Art Institute of Austin and has worked as a technical writer, freelance graphic designer, and illustrator.

About Link + Hud: Heroes by a Hair

Meet Link and Hud―brothers causing chaos in the first of a new middle grade series from real-life brothers Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey.

Lincoln and Hudson Dupré are brothers with what grown-ups call “active imaginations.” Link and Hud hunt for yetis in the Himalayas and battle orcs on epic quests. Unfortunately, their imaginary adventures wreak havoc in their real world. Dr. and Mrs. Dupré have tried every babysitter in the neighborhood and are at their wits’ end.

Enter Ms. Joyce. Strict and old-fashioned, she proves to be a formidable adversary. The boys don’t like her or her rules and decide she’s got to go. Through a series of escalating events―told as high-action comic panel sequences―the brothers conspire to undermine Ms. Joyce and get her fired. When they go so big that even Ms. Joyce can’t fix it, suddenly she’s out. Finally, success! Or is it?

With warm and authentic humor, Jarrett and Jerome Pumphrey have blended prose and graphic novel-style illustrations to craft a unique and subversive new series full of brotherly mischief and mayhem.

Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III — Children's Defense Fund

About Otis Moss III

With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Moss spent the last two decades practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.

With a unique gift to communicate across generations, Dr. Moss’ creative Bible-based messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching gift has made Dr. Moss a popular speaker on college campuses, at conferences, and churches across the globe. He is highly influenced by the works of Zora Neale Hurston, August Wilson, Howard Thurman, Jazz, and Hip-Hop music. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the pastoral ministry of his father, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, have been primary mentors for his spiritual formation.

Dancing in the Darkness

About Dancing in the Darkness

Dancing in the Darkness is a life-affirming guide to the practical, political, and spiritual challenges of our day. Drawing on the teachings of Dr. King, Howard Thurman, sacred scripture, southern wisdom, global spiritual traditions, Black culture, and his own personal experiences, Dr. Moss instructs you on how to practice spiritual resistance by combining justice and love. This collection helps us tap the spiritual reserves we all possess but too often overlook, so we can slay our personal demon, confront our civic challenges, and reach our highest goals.

Why are there "Ice Bats" in Austin, TX!?

Where is there Ice Hockey in El Paso!?

How did this wild and crazy idea of minor league hockey in Texas come to be and who was there to document it all!?

In comes this week's guest, Jason Cohen. Jason literally wrote the book on minor league hockey in Texas with a book titled "Zamboni Rodeo". In this episode Joe and Jason cover Jason's background in journalism, how he made his way to Texas, and why he spent a season following around this lovable team of misfits for a year.

Enjoy!

Jason Cohen's Profile Photo

About Jason Cohen

Writer at large and former senior editor Jason Cohen has written for Texas Monthly since 1995 (and texasmonthly.com since its first iteration). His 1997 story “The Ice Bats Cometh,” about minor league hockey in Texas, was the basis of his book Zamboni Rodeo (Greystone Press, 2001). He also wrote the magazine's first-ever Matthew McConaughey story, in August 1996. The coauthor of Generation Ecch! (Fireside Books, 1994) and coeditor of SXSW Scrapbook (Essex/University of Texas Press, 2011), he has also written for such publications as Rolling Stone, SPIN, Details, the Austin Chronicle, the Austin American-Statesman, Portland Monthly, and Cincinnati magazine. His 1995 Rolling Stone cover story on the band Hole prompted Courtney Love to yell at him from the stage at Lollapalooza in Austin, while his 2007 profile of the Portland strip club Mary's won a Sex-Positive Journalism Award. As one of the two primary writers for the TM Daily Post, Cohen wrote approximately five hundred stories for Texas Monthly in 2012. Fritz and Weezy in Chairs.jpg

About Fritz & Louise

“And now, here’s Fritz Coleman with the weather.”

For nearly four decades, Los Angelenos came to know and love Fritz Coleman through his gig as the weather reporter on KNBC, where his affable demeanor (honed in his early years of stand-up comedy) made him a staple of local news.  But when he retired from his weather gig two years ago, Coleman knew he wasn’t done working.  “That 11 o’clock news kept me from a lot of things,” he recalls.  “Now I could do all those things that massage my soul, be curious more, and discover more.”

That’s the impetus behind MEDIA PATH PODCAST, co-hosted by Fritz and Louise Palanker, veteran radio producer and documentarian.  With 100 episodes released so far, MEDIA PATH is a look back at what has defined our media for the past half-century.  With guests as eclectic as Congressional leader Adam Schiff, television legend Henry Winkler, Grammy winning songwriter Diane Warren, and “Double Dare” host Marc Summers, each week is a journey down a new path of remembering, learning, and reevaluating our shared memories and histories.

Every show includes discussion of current cultural events and recommendations from the hosts, as well as extended, deep-dive discussions with figures who have had meaningful and memorable impact on the media world we experience.  While many of the subjects will be familiar to Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers, the spirit of inquisitiveness, curiosity, and sharing that Fritz and Louise bring to each episode will ring familiar to newer generations who may be hearing about these subjects, people, and stories for the first time.

For Louise Palanker, who has been producing radio entertainment for decades and successful podcasts since 2005, that sense of serious and thoughtful discovery and discussion is what drives the podcast:  “We can rediscover the things that matter to us and celebrate what we love.”  For Coleman, the show is a new way for him to share his passion and curiosity about the world in the same charitable spirit that earned him Congressional recognition as “Humanitarian of the Year” for his work with the American Red Cross.  “It’s a great release valve of the pent-up energy from forty years of weather reporting,” he says.

And now – back to you Fritz and Louise, for more journeys on the MEDIA PATH.
